Stride Brothers Ltd.

Until relatively recently Stride Brothers Ltd were probably the most famous house builders in Bristol. The Stride family has been engaged in building for many generations. Originally from Somerset some members of the family moved to Cardiff where they were involved in building houses. Then they moved to Shirehampton in Bristol. The family built houses on Park Hill and Station Road, as well as some terraces in Shirehampton and Avonmouth. They were also involved with the building of Avonmouth docks and the Methodist church in Shirehampton as well as Severn Beach (where you can still find Stride Close).

The company was formed in 1848 by Edwin Stride (also known as Edmund) who later brought in his sons Jared and Jethro (the original 'Stride Brothers'.) The company was continued by Jared's sons Arthur and Frederick, and then run by their sons Leslie and Raymond.

The most well-known aspect of the company are their 'trademark' one-off luxury houses, each on a large plot, built in Sneyd Park between the wars. The company designed each one individually and used the finest quality materials. Many of these properties remain almost completely unchanged from when they were built - a real testimony to their quality. There are some fine examples of Stride Brothers houses to be seen on Old Sneed Park, Old Sneed Avenue and Mariners Drive, in Sneyd Park, Bristol.

In the 1960's many of the craftsmen were employed by Stride & co. (Builders) ltd. This company (run by Arthur's son Leslie) built one-off houses designed by his cousin Raymond (who later founded Stride Treglown).

The current Directors are all descendants of Edwin.
