Stride Brothers & Guilbert's chocolates

One of the lesser known business ventures of Stride Brothers Ltd was its partnership with Guilbert's chocolates - the famous Bristol luxury chocolate manufacturers.

Guilbert's were started by a Swiss chocolatier in the early 20th century in a shop on Park Street. the property was destroyed in the blitz, and the site was bought by Stride Brothers who obtained a licence to rebuild it. Most people are surprised when they realise that the building dates back only to the 1950's. During the hiatus Guilbert's were unable to trade in Bristol as they had no premises there, so Stride Brothers offered them use of another property they owned on The Promenade, Gloucester Road.

When the Park Street property was rebuilt they moved back again. Some years later, when the chocolate company was in financial difficulties Stride Brothers bought shares in the company to enable them to continue. They also helped them move to premises in Leonard Land, in the centre of old Bristol. The company has more recently moved to Small Street.
